Licensed Lighting Installation for Homes and Businesses
Lighting is the one electrical system people interact with every day, and it is the first thing anyone notices about a room. DT Electric installs, upgrades, and repairs lighting across the Portland metro and Clackamas County, from a single fixture swap to a whole-building plan worked out space by space.
Every electrician on the job is licensed, works to current code, and pulls permits when a job calls for one. You get a price before any work starts.

Indoor and Outdoor Lighting Services
Lighting work splits into a few different jobs. Here is what we handle.
Indoor Lighting
Good interior lighting is layered. Overhead light to fill the space, task light where people actually work, and accent light to give the room depth.
- Recessed and can lighting, including retrofits into existing ceilings
- Chandeliers and pendant lights, including high-ceiling and stairwell installs
- Wall sconces and accent lighting
- Under-cabinet lighting for kitchens and work areas
- Ceiling fan lights and fan replacements
- Track lighting
- Light fixture installation and replacement
- New switches, dimmers, three-way switching, and occupancy sensors
- Custom lighting design matched to the space and how it gets used
Outdoor Lighting
Exterior lighting does two jobs at once: it makes a property look better after dark and it makes it safer to move around.
- Landscape lighting to pick out gardens, trees, walkways, and architectural features
- Deck lighting, including post lights, stair lights, and under-rail runs
- Patio cover lighting and outdoor ceiling fans, with recessed, string, or pendant options
- Security and motion-sensor lighting at entries, driveways, and dark corners
- Path, walkway, and driveway lighting for long or unlit approaches
- Soffit and eave lighting
- Exterior outlets and weather-rated fixtures sized for wet-location use
Outdoor work has requirements indoor work does not. Wet-location-rated fixtures, GFCI protection, properly buried conductors, and transformers sized to the run. We do it that way so the system still works in its fifth winter.
LED Upgrades and Smart Lighting
Swapping older fixtures and bulbs for LED cuts energy use and takes most of the heat out of the fixture. We handle full LED conversions as well as individual retrofits.
- LED fixture and retrofit installation
- Dimmer replacement, since many older dimmers buzz or flicker on LED loads
- Smart switches and dimmers controllable by app, voice, or schedule
- Scheduled and photocell-controlled exterior lighting
- Whole-property smart lighting setup
Lighting Repairs
Repair is usually cheaper than replacement, so we check before we recommend anything.
- Flickering, dimming, or buzzing lights
- LED fixtures that stopped working, whether the fault is the driver, the dimmer, or the wiring
- Burned, cracked, or corroded sockets
- Dimmers, toggles, and smart switches that no longer respond
- Loose, damaged, or overheated wiring in a fixture box
- Fixtures pulling away from the ceiling or mounted without proper support
- Outdoor fixtures that fill with water or quit after a storm
If a light is flickering and the bulb is not the problem, the cause is usually a loose connection, and loose connections generate heat. That one is worth a call rather than a wait.

FAQs About Lighting Installation
How much does it cost to have a light installed?
It depends on the fixture, the wiring already in place, and whether the job needs a new circuit, switch, or ceiling support. A straight fixture swap on existing wiring is a small job. Adding recessed cans to a finished ceiling is a larger one. You get an upfront quote before anything starts.
What is included in a lighting installation?
Mounting the fixture, connecting it to the building’s wiring, adding or replacing the switch or dimmer if needed, testing the circuit, and confirming the install meets code. If the box or support is not rated for the fixture, we correct that as part of the work.
Do I need an electrician to install lighting?
For anything beyond changing a bulb, yes. Fixture installation involves wiring, grounding, box support ratings, and load on the circuit. Done wrong, it causes shorts, shocks, and fires, and some of this work requires a licensed electrician and a permit.
Can you fix LED lights that stopped working?
Yes. When an LED fixture fails it is usually the driver, an incompatible dimmer, or a wiring fault rather than the diodes themselves. We trace which one it is before quoting a repair or a replacement.
What kinds of lighting can you install?
Nearly all common types: recessed cans, chandeliers, pendants, track, sconces, under-cabinet, ceiling fan lights, landscape and path lighting, deck and stair lighting, patio cover lighting, security and motion fixtures, and LED retrofits in offices and shops.
How long does a lighting install take?
A standard fixture replacement usually runs one to two hours. Recessed lighting, chandeliers needing extra support, and landscape systems with buried runs take longer. We give you a time estimate before we start.
Is landscape lighting worth installing?
It does more than look good. Lit walkways, steps, and driveways cut the chance of a fall after dark, and lit exteriors are a basic deterrent. Built with wet-rated fixtures and properly buried wiring, a landscape system lasts years with little attention.
Can you add smart lighting to an existing building?
Usually, yes. Most buildings can take smart switches and dimmers without new wiring, though some smart devices need a neutral wire in the switch box, which older construction does not always have. We check the box first and tell you what will work before you buy equipment.
